Welcome to the memorial page for

Aline Marie (Popp) Smith

September 18, 1932 ~ October 29, 2015 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Sellersburg, Indiana

Aline Marie Smith died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Thursday, October 29, 2015.  She was 83.  Aline was the daughter of Frank and Clara Popp and sister to her seven siblings, Martha, Gene, Helen, Walt, Loretta, Carolyn and Patricia.

Aline grew up among the rolling hills of the Popp farm in the St. Joe area.  Her early childhood memories were of sharing chores among her large and loving family and remained proud of being chosen 4H Farm Sweetheart at one point.  She attended St. Joe Catholic Church in her early years and all her life along with St. Paul Church after marrying James C. Smith, now deceased, and moving to Sellersburg, where her six children attended St. Paul’s School and later Silver Creek High and Providence. Aline was a dedicated, attentive mother. She helped run the Wheel Café, and then later embarked on new, successful and exciting careers, including one at Rhodes Men’s Retail Store (when located downtown Louisville) and many years in real estate with Buzz Bauer (now Schuler Bauer).  She loved to sell and, with her distinct and personal approach, was great at it, achieving recognition for her sales results on a number of occasions.  More importantly to her, however, was the opportunity to help people fulfill their dreams and in the process brought joy to those who had the good fortune of knowing her and working with her.  Stories of her real estate experiences lasted to the end of her days.

As a sister, mother, grandmother (affectionately known as Nana Aline and Grandma) and great-grandmother, Aline knew love - unconditional, unqualified love.  Family was everything to her.  Outside the family she remained a trusting, supportive friend and confidant to so many.  She will be missed to be sure, but her legacy of love will remain an inspiration and source of strength to all who knew her.

Aline is survived by five of her six children, having lost her oldest daughter, our beloved Denise M. Smith in 2006.  Surviving children include Lana M. Green (wife of Steve Green), James “Kirk” Smith (husband of Nancy Smith), Neil D. Smith (husband of Patty Smith), Craig S. Smith and Amy Spalding (wife of Greg Spalding.)  Grandchildren include Jessica Green, Casey Green Erhart, and Michael Green; Stephanie Smith Stemle, Lauren Smith VanCleve and Ryan Smith; Matthew Smith and Laura Smith; and Benjamin Hatfield, Nicholas Spalding and Adam Spalding.  Great-grandchildren include Luke and Sam Stemle, Kimberly, Brayden and Kane Erhart and Milo VanCleve.
