Yon Kum (Hong) Hammer

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Yon Kum Hammer, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Yon passed away peacefully on Friday, November 7th, 2025, at the age of 87, surrounded by her loving family in Charlestown, Indiana.

 Yon was born on October 16, 1938, in Cheorwon, Korea. Her journey through life was one of resilience and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know her. Moving across the world, she embraced her new home in Charlestown, Indiana, with grace and courage.

 Yon worked for many years as a nurse assistant, first honing her skills as a cook at Longworth Nursing Home, where she was beloved for her delicious meals and exemplary bedside manner. Even as she ascended to the role of a certified nursing assistant, her dedication to her residents never wavered. When the nursing home closed, Yon continued her career at Wako Electronics in Louisville until her retirement.

 Beyond her professional life, Yon was renowned for her love of nature and gardening. Her beautifully landscaped home was a testament to her artistry and passion, often featured in local newspapers. She found immense joy in cooking, a talent that brought comfort and delight to family and friends.

 Yon was preceded in death by her father, Jae Se Hong, her mother, Bok Soen Om and her spouse, David Ray Hammer Sr., as well as her sister, Yon Chun Hong. She is survived by her loving family, including her daughter, Barbra Reed; sons Steve Hammer and wife Pamela, and David Hammer and wife Keri; grandchildren David Hammer III, Quentin Hammer, Cameron Hammer, Cole Reed, and Conner Self; and great-granddaughters Paisley Hammer and Elowen Hammer. Yon is also survived by her sister, Yon Chae Hong.

 Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) with a visitation on Friday, November 14th, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 pm. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 12:00 P.M. central time, 1:00 P.M. Eastern Time at Hammer Cemetery in Tompkinsville, Kentucky.
