Margaret MacLeod Burke

Margaret M. Burke ,81, born in New Albany, Indiana on October 30, 1941 died peacefully on June 17, 2023 at Autumn Woods Health Campus, New Albany, Indiana.  She was married to her husband, Larry Burke for 59 years and was the mother of their four children, Michael, Kathleen, Shannon and Mary Beth.

She was preceded in death by her Mother and Father, Ann and Daniel MacLeod, formerly of New Albany, Indiana.  She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Diehl, Atlanta, Georgia and brother, John MacLeod, Phoenix, Arizona. 

Margaret is survived by her husband, Larry and their children Michael Burke (Dayton, OH), Kathleen Burke (Albuquerque, NM), Shannon Rush (Todd) (New Albany, IN), and Mary Beth Schuckman (Chris) (Jeffersonville, IN).  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Maureen Nash (Wes), Madeline Burke, Cecilia Rush and Lydia Rush.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Margaret attended Holy Trinity Elementary School, New Albany, Indiana.  She also graduated in the class of 1959 Our Lady of Providence High School, Clarksville, Indiana.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Spaulding University, Louisville, Kentucky in 1963.  She received a Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University along with a Special Education Degree.

Her teaching career included many years teaching in the Greater Clark School Corporation.  She also taught briefly in the Louisville Public School System at Laukhuf Elementary School and taught at Childplace in Jeffersonville, Indiana as a volunteer.

Margaret will always be remembered as one who never met a stranger and was always willing to help those in need.  She was very personable and known throughout her life for her friendly and warm personality.

Visitation will be at Garr Funeral Home, 7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172, Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 4:00pm until 8:00 pm. The celebration of Margaret’s life and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Paul II Church, 2253 West St. Joe Road, Sellersburg, IN  47172 at 10:00 am Friday, June 23, 2023 with burial to follow in the Church Cemetery.
