Betty Jane (O'Conner) Patterson

Betty Jane Patterson, a cherished resident of Sellersburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, at the age of 92. Born in Hammond, Indiana, on August 8, 1933, Betty was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Betty was the daughter of the late Walter and Florence O’Conner. She grew up in a lively household with seven siblings: Bill, Bob, Jim, Ethel, Bernice, Dorothy, and Jack. As a young girl in Hammond, she attended Hammond Elementary and Hammond High School.  In her early years Betty worked multiple jobs, including roles as a meat wrapper, waitress, and her long-term position as a bus driver with New Albany Schools, to ensure her children never lacked anything.

Later, Betty found love again with Bill Patterson, her soulmate, whom she met at work. Their union was one of love, companionship, and mutual respect, lasting until his passing. They moved together to Kentucky, creating countless cherished memories throughout their years.

Betty was a devoted animal lover, always finding joy in her furry friends, especially her late dog, Rock. Her love extended to any animals, and visits from her daughter Chris's dog, Babz, were always highlights. Betty was a voracious reader, particularly enjoying the works of Danielle Steele, and she had a fondness for the color blue.

Survivors include her children, Christine Haynes (Jimmy), Cindy Harbolt (Jimmie), Bill Urtz (Diane) and Bob Urtz (Pam).

In addition to her parents and siblings, Betty is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Patterson.

Those who knew Betty will forever remember her kindness, resilience, and love for her family and animals.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Betty’s life at a visitation on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, followed by the funeral service at 4:00 pm. Both will be held at Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172).
