Velma J. Owens , 91, entered eternal life on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Symphony of Valley Farms in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born on May 8, 1933, in Nahunta, Georgia, to her loving parents, James and Floria Harrell.

Velma was a cherished member of the First Baptist Church of Sellersburg, where she was known for her warm spirit and unwavering faith. Her hands were rarely idle; she possessed a remarkable talent for needlework and delighted in crocheting, making quilts, and embroidery. Her baked goods were legendary among family and friends, embodying her nurturing spirit and love for those around her.

Velma's legacy of love, craftsmanship, and faith will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Velma was preceded in death by her loving husband, Buster Lee Owens, by her daughter, Darlene Hardesty, by her two brothers, Waylen and Alvin Harrell and by her dear lifelong friend, Rosetta Watson.

Survivors include her daughters, Zelphia Diane Richard (Gerald) of Summerville, Kentucky, Rose Bibb (David) of Louisville, Kentucky and her sister, Elizabeth Bohannon of Florida. Velma also leaves 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren to cherish her memory.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, June 17, 2024 at the Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) with interment to follow at Sellersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 16, 2024 from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and on Monday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
