Phillip Harrison Matthews, born on March 16, 1947, in Norfolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home in Sellersburg, Indiana, on September 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 78 years old.

Phillip dedicated his career to Bell South, where he worked diligently as a lineman until his retirement. He initially lived in Florida but moved to Southern Indiana in 1994, where he continued to enjoy the company of family and friends.

A proud veteran, Phillip served in the National Guard, embodying a spirit of service and dedication throughout his life. His commitment to his work, family, and country were hallmarks of his character.

Phillip is survived by his loving daughter, Jennifer (Matthew) Smith; his sister, Elsie Meyer; his brother, Matt Matthews; his treasured grandsons, Samuel, Max, and Alex; and three cherished great-grandchildren. His memory will also be fondly held by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Jane Matthews (Berry), by his father, Jessie Ruffin Matthews, and his mother, Ruth Opal Matthews and by his brother, Bill Matthews, who have now welcomed him home.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a graveside service to be held at Sellersburg Cemetery on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 4:00 pm. Arrangements are being handled by Garr Funeral Home.
