Paula Jane
Stewart
Nov 3, 1938 — Jun 20, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paula Jane Stewart, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who peacefully departed this life at her home in Memphis, Indiana on Saturday, June 20, 2026. Born on November 3, 1938, in Paynesville, Indiana, Paula was a pillar of strength and love for her family and community throughout her 87 years.
Paula grew up on a family farm in New Washington, Indiana, a setting that nurtured her deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and formed the foundation of her role as a devoted mother and caretaker. She devoted many years to West Clark Schools, where she touched numerous lives with her kindness and dedication.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Edward Stewart, her parents, Samuel A. Montgomery and Helen L. Montgomery, her cherished son Jim Stewart who passed in a tragic accident serving the community as a fireman at the age of 19, her brother Steve Montgomery and her son-in-law Jay Collings, Paula now joins them in eternal peace.
Paula is survived by her loving son Gary Stewart and his wife Marian, her devoted daughter Gay Collings, her sister Karen Siewert and her sister-in-law, Patti Montgomery. Her legacy of love and kindness extends to her five grandchildren, Chris, Brandon, Ben, Luke, and Marty, as well as 8 great-grandchildren and many treasured nieces and nephews. Paula was also blessed with the companionship and care of her wonderful caregivers, Madra Stemle and Pam Lee, who provided continuous support in her final years.
After the heartbreaking loss of her son Jim, Paula found solace in the embrace of her family and pursued new passions—including golf, tennis, traveling and guitar. Her precious dog Willie brought her endless comfort. Paula also cherished weekends at the farm, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Paula enjoyed the Stewart family gatherings and spending fun times with lifelong friends. She embodied the strength of an angel, caring tirelessly for her husband Bill during his long illness, never leaving his side.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, June 26, 2026 at Memphis Christian Church. Visitation will be held at the Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) on Thursday from 1:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M.
Her unwavering love and care ensured that her family grew up enveloped in her warmth, wisdom, and generosity. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Memphis Christian Church (13503 Blue Lick Rd
