IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Murtle May
(Cain) Gabbard
May 2, 1948 – May 24, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Murtle May Gabbard, who departed this world peacefully on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at her home. Born on Sunday, May 2, 1948, in New Washington, Indiana, Murtle spent her 77 years bringing joy to her family, friends, and community. A long-time resident of Charlestown, Indiana, her warm spirit and kind nature left a lasting impact on everyone she met. Murtle was a proud graduate of New Washington High School and dedicated 35 years of her life to General Electric as a meticulous inspector. Her love for the outdoors, flowers, and the art of homemaking was evident in everything she did. She was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Murtle loved her walks in nature and was known for her amiable personality, greeting every new face as if they were an old friend. Family was at the center of Murtle's life. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Ronette Leal, her cherished grandchildren, Rebecca McCawley, Ashley McCawley, Elizabeth Richmond, and Matthew Cross, and her adored great-grandchildren, Maranda Pierce, Jameson Pierce, Jenny Richmond, and Jersey Richmond. Murtle also leaves behind her dear siblings, Ray Cain, Nina Armstrong (Leon), Carol Humes and Dolly Cain. Murtle's passing is mourned by all who knew her, as she joins those who preceded her in death: her parents, James and Edna Cain, her son, Robert C. McCawley, her brothers John Henry Cain and Joe Webb, and her sister Barbara Cain. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation at Garr Funeral Home in (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. A funeral service celebrating Murtle's remarkable life will follow immediately at 3:00 PM. Burial will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery in New Washington, Indiana following the service.
