Obituary

Michael Kevin Barger, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his residence in Georgetown, Indiana, on Friday, July 31st, 2026. He was 63 years old. Born in Jeffersonville, Indiana, on Thursday, July 11th, 1963, Michael grew up in New Albany, Indiana living a life full of love, joy, and passion, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by all who knew him.

Michael was a skilled industrial sandblaster and painter who spent his career dedicated to his craft. His career began after graduation from New Albany High School when he worked on the construction of the Marble Hill Nuclear Power Station. There, he honed the skills that would define his professional work. Michael went on to work for Payne and Hager, Inc. in Louisville, Kentucky, and finally, Louisville Dryer Company, until he was forced to retire for health reasons. His community knew him as a proud member of the Painters Local Union 118.

Michael had a vibrant personality enlivened by his love for NASCAR, where his favorite driver was Darrell Waltrip. His deep appreciation for cars was matched by his passion for music. Michael adored collecting and listening to music using vintage methods such as record players and 8-tracks. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Cincinnati Reds and IU sports, embodying the spirit of sportsmanship in every aspect of his life.

His love for fishing and bowling brought him much joy, and he was notably active in numerous bowling leagues during his younger years. Later, in his retirement, Michael enjoyed golfing and even worked at the New Albany Country Club to keep busy and stay engaged with the community.

Michael is survived by his loving wife Bonnie Barger. He is also remembered by his children: Michael Barger, Jr. (Heather), Brandon Barger, Chris Barger (Maranda), and Travis Barger (Payton). He is cherished by his grandchildren: Micah, Benjamin, Zipporah, Caleb, Lincoln, Toby, Zeruiah, Maisyn, Jo, and Neo. He leaves behind his siblings: Greg Barger (Carol), Jeff Barger (Deborah), and Jerry Barger. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Albert Lee Barger and Eva Dean Barger, and his brothers, Randy, Brian, Neal, and Dennis.
