Obituary

Mary "Margaret" Anderson passed away in her home in Virginia on Thursday, May 2, 2024; she was 83. Margaret was born in Sellersburg, Indiana, on February 7, 1941, to Joseph Conroy and Mary Irene (Weidert) Conroy. She was the 5th of nine siblings, four of whom survived her: Sue (Conroy) Howard, Francis Conroy, Katy Conroy, and Irene (Conroy) Carlow.  She is also survived by her three children, Bill Anderson, Rebecca Anderson, and Ed Anderson, and her two grandchildren, Ashley Anderson and Kyle Anderson.

Margaret took great pride in her family and was an eager researcher of her deep roots in southern Indiana through her Conroy, Francis, Stump, and Cuddy ancestors. Further research highlighted that, through her maternal grandmother (Mote), she was the descendant of numerous intrepid adventurers and pioneers who voyaged to colonial America seeking what would become the American Dream. She could count among her ancestors her 9th great-grandfather, Edward Doty of the Mayflower; several generations of Quakers, the earliest of whom voyaged to the Colonies in the mid to late 1600s seeking religious freedom; and several Patriots who fought for freedom in the Revolutionary War. These brave and determined adventures briefly made homes in many of the eastern Colonies on their inexorable journey to the Midwest to finally settle in Illinois and ultimately, Sellersburg, Indiana.

When Margaret left Sellersburg for Indiana University, she began her own adventure that spanned the next 60+ years and 10 states. She became an educator, taking her first job in Las Vegas with underprivileged children. There, she met Norman Anderson at a church social and later married him in 1964; he would pre-decease her in 2016. Three children followed, and Margaret proved a natural as a loving and supportive mother. She would prove instrumental in raising three strong, intelligent, and independent individuals who would go on to lead successful and rewarding lives. She later became a Director of Religious Education in Indianapolis and achieved her Masters in Georgia. Margaret retired as a teacher at a Catholic school in Missouri, instructing junior high students. Just for fun, she took her own voyage to Italy and explored the Amalfi Coast

Now, Margaret takes the ultimate journey. Everyone who loved her, valued her, and respected her asks that she watch over us now and then as we, in turn, wish her peace and fun on her newest adventure.
