Obituary

Mabel Jean Balmer , a beloved resident of Sellersburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 16th, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on January 3rd, 1928, in her lifelong hometown of Sellersburg, Mabel was a cherished member of her community who touched the lives of many through her warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit.

A proud alumna of Silver Creek High School, Class of 1946, Mabel went on to enjoy a fulfilling career with the Social Security Administration before retiring. Her dedication and commitment to her work were only surpassed by her love for her family and community.

Mabel's life was rich with diverse interests and hobbies. She was an active member of the Red Hat Society, the American Legion, and the VFW. Her love for karaoke was well-known, often lighting up rooms with her joyful singing. Mabel also had a great passion for traveling with her family and spent countless cherished moments boating and camping at Monroe Reservoir.

She is survived by her loving family: her daughter, Jennifer Balmer; her son, Terry Balmer, and his wife Sue; her daughter-in-law, Shirley Balmer; her grandchildren, Chad Balmer (Andrea), Russell Balmer, Todd Balmer (Staci), and Sarah Balmer; along with seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mabel's presence will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Mabel was preceded in death by her loving husband, Homer (Chip) R. Balmer; her parents, George L. Allen and Sara J. Allen; her son, Mark (Moose) Balmer; her sister, Irene Ehringer; and her brothers, Everitt Allen and Raymond Allen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, December 23, 2024 at the Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, IN 47172) with entombment to follow at Kraft Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. and on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to your local food pantry, The American Cancer Society or to the charity of your choice.
