Obituary

Leon Kirkpatrick, a respected member of the Underwood, Indiana community and a legendary figure in the cowboy world, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 13th, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on Thursday, June 16th, 1938, Leon lived a full and adventurous life, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations.

Leon dedicated his life to his work as a farrier, a profession that allowed him to merge his deep love for horses with his skilled craftsmanship. His reputation as a talented and reliable farrier extended far beyond his local community, earning him respect and admiration.

Known for his cowboy spirit, Leon was passionate about riding horses and was often found on horseback trail riding through the woods, a passion he pursued with unparalleled enthusiasm. His happy companion included his beloved dog who rode with him on horseback and as he drove his team of mules. He also had a love for squirrel hunting and took great pride in raising and training hunting dogs.

Leon was a seasoned participant in rodeos, a champion roper who was hailed as a legend in the cowboy world. His skills and dedication to this timeless tradition left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege to watch him compete.

Leon was a cherished father and grandfather, survived by his daughter Sharon Baker, son-in-law Stan Baker, son William Kirkpatrick, step-son Robby Biggs, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He found immense joy in the company and accomplishments of his descendants.

He was preceded in death by his birth father, Roy Kirkpatrick, his mother, Mary Margaret Oles and step-father William Oles who raised him, his beloved spouse of 33 years, Marlene Kirkpatrick, his son Tony Kirkpatrick, daughter Chilita Kirkpatrick, brothers Don Kirkpatrick and William Oles, and sister Mary Rigsby. Their memories were his guiding light and a source of strength throughout his life.

Leon’s passing is a profound loss to those who knew and loved him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and community. His adventurous spirit, love for nature, and cowboy legacy will continue to inspire.
