Joseph A. Bishop , 76, peacefully passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024, in New Albany, Indiana. He was born on January 17, 1948 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Raymond and Marjorie Bishop (Yuhr). Joseph's journey included honorable service in the United States Navy and a fulfilling career as a conductor with the P&L Railroad, from which he retired.
He was a member of the St. John Paul II Catholic Church of Sellersburg for 51 years. Joe enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, through activities like bowling, fishing, and bike riding. Joseph leaves behind a legacy of service, commitment, and the warmth of cherished memories.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Ann Bishop of New Albany, Indiana, his sons, Mark Bishop of Sellersburg, Indiana, Alex Bishop of Memphis, Indiana, Todd Bishop (Kelly) of Sellersburg, Indiana, his daughters, Laura Birnbaum (Jason) of Elmhurst, Illinois, Joanna Bergum (Trevor) of Westfield, Indiana, his brother, Raymond Bishop (Joan) of Louisville, Kentucky and his sisters, Anna May Scherzer of Louisville, Caroline Embry of Louisville, Marjorie Bolly (John) of Clarksville, Indiana and Charlotte Stith (Dennis) of Louisville. Joe also leaves 8 grandchildren to cherish his memory, Jacob, Katie, Libby, Annabel, Alex, Sam, Jack and Aiden.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at the St. John Paul II Catholic Church (2253 West St. Joe Road, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) with interment to follow at Sellersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) with a time of remembrance and stories starting at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will resume on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the mass at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to: Alzheimer's Association of Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana (6100 Dutchman's Lane, Louisville KY 40202).
