Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Harmon Vest. Born on February 27th, 1958, in Louisville, KY, John departed this world peacefully on July 11th, 2025, at the age of 67. He was a beloved Husband, Father, Papaw, Brother, Uncle, King of Dad Jokes, and Ultimate UofL Fan.

Johnny leaves behind a trail of laughter, love, and more dad jokes than the world was truly ready for. Born to bring smiles and raised to love fiercely, Johnny never met a stranger—only friends he hadn't cracked a joke with yet. He was a proud father, a legendary papaw, a loyal brother, a devoted uncle, and a loving husband whose heart was as steady as his sense of humor. His marriage was built on kindness, laughter, and unconditional love—a partnership that stood as a shining example of how to love and live well.

If you knew Johnny, you knew his heart was as big as his collection of Louisville Cardinals gear. Whether cheering courtside or from his sacred recliner, he never missed a game—and rarely missed an opportunity to deliver a perfectly timed pun.

Johnny's greatest joy came from watching his grandkids flip, shoot, set or throw a ball. He was their biggest fan, sideline commentator, and post-game snack provider. And when the games were done, he'd retreat to his recliner throne, remote in hand, Cards on TV, and another dad joke locked and loaded.

He loved deeply, laughed loudly, and lived in a way that made everyone around him feel at home. If you were lucky enough to get a bear hug or hear him say "I love you more," you knew you were family.

Beyond his professional endeavors, John was an avid family man who cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He is survived by his beloved wife Sandy (Standiford) Vest; children: Johnathon Vest (Meghan), Ben Browne (Dawn), Brian Browne (Laura), Lindsay Vest, and Yuliya Creech (Ryan), who were the light of his life. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Jackson, Ashley, Aiden, Kaylee, Donovan, Josh, Jakalynn, Brooklynn, Tyler, Mason, Kenzie, Hadley, and Maddie.

A devoted brother, John is also survived by his siblings Artie Vest (Catherine), Pat Vest (Becky), Jeanne Gregory (Jimmy), Gail Ferrell (Charlie), Carla Patton (Trevor Croft), and sister-in-law Tina Vest and a plethora of nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his father Arthur Vest, mother Oma Vest, and brother Robbie Vest, John leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness.

To honor Johnny, we invite everyone who knew and loved him to come celebrate his incredible life with family and friends. Please wear your best Louisville Cardinal red and black—the brighter, the better. He wouldn't want it any other way.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation at Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172), on Monday, July 21st, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and Tuesday July 22 from 9:00 am until the time of the service. A funeral service to honor John's life and legacy will be held Tuesday, July 22nd, 2025, at 11:00 am at the same location.

Arrangements for John's final journey have been entrusted to Garr Funeral Home, where his life will be celebrated, and his memory will be honored. John will be dearly missed by all who knew him, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

As Johnny would probably say: "I'm not gone, I'm just on a permanent time out… with better seats for the game."

Rest easy, Johnny. Go Cards.
