Obituary for John E. "Gramps" McKim

John E. McKim, affectionately known as "Gramps," age 76, of Charlestown, Indiana, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. Born in New Albany, Indiana, John built a life defined by hard work, devotion to those he loved, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. A retired pipefitter with Local 502, John took great pride in his craft and the lifelong friendships he formed throughout his career. At home, he spent countless hours in his workshop, where his passion for carpentry and metalworking came to life through projects that reflected both skill and creativity. Outside the workshop, he found peace in nature, whether hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of the outdoors. John is survived by his beloved wife, Sherry (Robertson) McKim. He also leaves behind his children, Amy Bower (Bruce) and Barry McKim (Shanna), who will keep his memories alive. He was a proud grandfather to RJ Jenkins (Ali Anderson), Katie Rojas (Shane), Avigayle McKim, Allie McKim and Jake Bower. He was predeceased by his grandson Cory Bower. His legacy continues through his cherished greatgrandchildren, Rosie, River, and Cali Rojas, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride. John was one of ten children. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven of his siblings and is survived by his two brothers, Arthur McKim and Bill McKim. John will be remembered for his quiet strength, skilled craftsmanship, love of the outdoors, and unwavering devotion to his family. Above all, he treasured his role as "Gramps," a title he carried with pride, tenderness, and a heart full of love. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the lessons he taught, and the family he loved so dearly. Gramps shared one final hunting story, told one last fishing tale, and kissed his great-grandbabies for the last time. The power tools in his workshop are now silent, his final woodworking project complete, and he will no longer accidentally set off the security alarms. The past six and a half years have been difficult since his brain bleed, and the last fourteen months brought even greater challenges following two strokes. His recent fall proved to be more than his weary body could overcome, and he peacefully journeyed to his heavenly home, where he is once again healthy, strong, and whole. We find comfort in knowing he was welcomed with open arms by the loved ones who had gone before him. He went out in a whirlwind and left us in a gust of glory!

Memorial visitation will be held on October 10, 2026 from 12 pm – 4 pm at Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311 Sellersburg, In 47172) with funeral to follow at 4 PM.
