John William Eckert, a cherished resident of Sellersburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on August 22, 1938, in New Albany, Indiana, John led a life marked by dedication, service, and love.
John's life journey took him from the skies to the rails, and his passion for serving others was evident throughout his career. He honorably served in the United States Air Force, a testament to his unwavering patriotism. Following his years in military service, John attended St. Mary College as a seminary student from 1960 until 1963. After his time in seminary he took on the noble role of a Kentucky State Trooper. Later, he found his calling with CSX Railroad, where he skillfully operated cranes until his retirement.
John was a devoted member of the St. John Paul II Catholic Church in Sellersburg, where he shared his love for music as part of the Senior Choir and served his community as a Eucharistic Minister. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and relationships.
Beyond his professional achievements and religious commitments, John was an avid gardener and golfer, relishing the tranquility and challenge each provided. He also engaged with the community in various ways, including working as an auctioneer and serving as a firefighter for the Louisville Fire Department in his early years.
John is survived by his beloved sons: Albert Eckert (Wendy), Michael Eckert (Deana), Phillip Eckert (Kerri), and Paul Eckert (Kathleen). His legacy extends further through his cherished grandchildren: Molly, Jack, Nick, Andrew, Noah, Nate, Emily, Ben, Ethan, and Owen, and great-grandchildren: Henry, Olive, Gabe, Adam, Ellis, Austin, Evelyn, Lucy, and Rhodes. His memory will also be forever treasured by a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 57 years, Mary Frances Eckert (McIntyre), his parents, August and Mary Agnes Eckert (Popp) and by his daughter-in-law, Deana.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a visitation from 10:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on Monday, November 17, 2025, at St. John Paul II Catholic Church (St. Joe Hill Chapel -2605 W. St. Joe Road, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172 ) . A Funeral Mass to celebrate John's remarkable life will follow at 1:00 pm on the same day and at the same location with interment to follow in church cemetery.
