James S. Samples, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19th, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on Monday, February 9th, 1942, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, James was cherished by all who knew him for his warm heart and incomparable spirit.

James was the devoted son of late James Lewis Samples and Virginia J. Samples. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Jared Samples.

James proudly served his country in the United States Army National Guard and later pursued a fulfilling career as a welder and mechanic, retiring from the L&N Railroad. His keen interest in cars saw him as a passionate enthusiast who not only appreciated the beauty of hot rods and show cars but also dedicated his talents to building and restoring them.

Known for his lifelong devotion to Indiana University basketball, James was an avid fan who rarely missed watching a game.

James is survived by his children, sons Steve Samples and Shuan Samples; his daughter, Dawn McCarthey. He also leaves behind his grandchildren—Jacob Samples, Kaci McCarthey, and Maria McCarthey,

In accordance with his wishes, James will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date to honor his memory and the indelible mark he left on everyone who knew him.

Steve wishes to extend his heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Traditions of Hunter Station for the love, care, and compassion they bestowed upon James and his family over the last two years.
