James Phillips Hannigan, DVM, a longtime resident of Charlestown, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on September 15th, 1952, in Louisville, Kentucky, James led a life dedicated to his family, community, and passion for veterinary medicine.
A proud graduate of Trinity High School in Louisville, James furthered his education at the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky before earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from The Ohio State University. He dedicated 45 years to veterinary medicine, spending 40 of those years serving animals and their owners at his esteemed practice, Silver Creek Veterinary Clinic in Sellersburg.
James was a cherished member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Charlestown, where he worshiped faithfully whenever his health permitted. Known for his love of walking his dog, going on long hikes, and his keen interest in history and genealogy with a special focus on the Civil War, James lived a full and vibrant life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Denise Kay Hannigan, his loving children, James "Jim" Hannigan, Jr. (Tiffany) and Aimee Hannigan; and his cherished grandchildren, Sydney Hannigan, James Hannigan, Avery Hannigan, Henry Hannigan, Sovay Popp, and Gabriel Popp. James also leaves his siblings, Patty Hagan, Joe Hannigan and Mike Hannigan to cherish his memory. James was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Patrick Hannigan; his mother, Hazel Payne Hannigan; and his brother, Tim Hannigan.
Dr. James Phillips Hannigan will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed community member, whose contributions to his field and kindness to those around him leave a lasting legacy.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, June 23, 2025 at St. Michael Catholic Church (101 St. Michaels Drive, Charlestown, Indiana 47172) with interment to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025 from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172).
