IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James E.
Carpenter
April 21, 1947 – May 23, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James "Ed" Carpenter, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. James passed away peacefully on Friday, May 23rd, 2025, at the age of 78. He was a cherished resident of Clarksville, Indiana but his life's journey began in Franklin, Kentucky, where he was born on Monday, April 21st, 1947.
Ed grew up on a farm in Franklin, Kentucky, where he cultivated a strong work ethic and a love for nature. He honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army and was a proud Vietnam Veteran. After his military service, James devoted his life to a career as an over-the-road truck driver, a profession he dedicated himself to until his retirement in January of this year.
On a personal note, James was a man of many passions. He found joy in camping and boating. The stories he shared during these cherished moments will forever echo among his camping family. Ed tolerated his wife's dog, Vance or also known as "Piss Weed". He kept his love for Vance hidden well, but all knew Ed loved him. He was an avid fan of television, particularly "The Young and the Restless," a show he rarely missed. Interrupting him during his favorite program was something to be done at your peril!
Beloved by many, Ed is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Marcia Sumler. His legacy continues through his family: his brother Ricky Carpenter (Jana), his niece, Sheri Harper (Mike), his daughter Stephanie Martin (Chris), his son Gregory Sumler (Cari), and his daughter Jayme Andres. He was a proud grandfather to Michael Martin, Morgan Warren (Logan), Mollie Nagel (Alex), Courtney Sumler, Chad Case ( Taylor), Christina Foley (Tanner), Mackenzie Martin (Sammy), Cassidy Case, Ryan Sumler and Brooke Sumler. He leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will remember his kindness, humor, and wisdom.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, James and Ruth Carpenter; his sister, Carolyn Carpenter Gregory, his brothers, Mark Thomas Carpenter and Michael Ray Carpenter, and his great-granddaughter, Evey Jane Andres.
A visitation will be held at Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) on Friday, May 30th, 2025, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 pm. Military honors and a committal service will follow the service at New Albany National Cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.
