Herbert "Gene" McRae , 101, entered eternal life on the morning of Friday, June 11, 2021 at Sellersburg Health Care in Sellersburg, Indiana. He was born at home in Elizabeth, Indiana on the 16th of April 1920 to the late Edgar and Hattie McRae (Leffler). Gene retired from Ambrosius Construction where he was a professional crane operator.  He honorably and faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Gene was a recipient of a Purple Heart and multiple Bronze Stars during his service to our country. He was a member of the Sellersburg United Methodist Church, Buckner Masonic Lodge and the Disabled American Veterans of New Albany, Indiana. Gene enjoyed gardening and was gifted in the art of unwanted squirrel relocation. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Naomi Mellon McRae, by his brothers, Howard, Norman, Vaughn and Maynard McRae, by his sisters, Audry Gambrall and by his half-sister Helen Brown.

Surviviors include his children, Marilyn McAllister (Bob) of Wake Forrest, North Carolina, Allen McRae (Mary) of Sellersburg, Alice Krimple (Ray) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Judy Lewis (Rodney) of Charlestown and his brother, John Henry McRae of Columbus, Indiana, 7 grandchildren, Eric Ward, Chris Lewis, Debbie Greene, Andrew McRae, Robert Krimple, Jennifer Potts and Nathan McRae. Gene also leaves 9 great-grandchildren to cherish his memory.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at the Garr Funeral Home in Sellersburg with interment to follow at Sellersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and on Wednesday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
