Henry Allen Poteet, Jr. 75, transitioned to eternal life on Monday, March 4, 2024, at his home in Charlestown, Indiana, surrounded by his beloved family. He was born to the late Henry and Stella Rose (Cox) Poteet in Hodgenville, Kentucky on November 13, 1948.
Henry's journey was marked by a dedication to education and service. He graduated from New Albany High School in 1966, paving the way for a remarkable career in academia. He earned a degree in education from Indiana University, followed by a master's degree in education from Indiana University Southeast. His passion for shaping young minds led him to serve diligently for 44 years in the New Albany - Floyd County School System.
Throughout his career, Henry touched countless lives as an educator. He imparted knowledge and wisdom at Mount Tabor, Lafayette, and Georgetown Elementary Schools, as well as Highland Hills Middle School. His commitment to nurturing the next generation left an indelible mark on the community he served.
In 1975, Henry married Ruth (Jolly) Poteet. Together, they were blessed with two sons, Jason and Darren, whose lives were enriched by their father's unwavering love and guidance.
Henry's faith was an integral part of his life, and he found solace and purpose as a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Sellersburg. Within the congregation, he served as a deacon, musician, choir member, and actively participated in the food pantry ministry, embodying the essence of compassion and generosity.
Henry Poteet's legacy is one of dedication, kindness, and profound impact. He leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom that will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Poteet of Charlestown, Indiana, his sons, Jason Poteet of Lexington, Indiana, Darren Poteet (Diane) of Sellersburg, Indiana, his 3 grandchildren, Shelby Glass (Kristopher) of Henryville, Indiana, Braxton Poteet and Jase Poteet and his great-grandchild, Mason Glass.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) with interment to follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
