Obituary

Elmer Elzie Gore, Jr., 83, of Salem, Indiana, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2023 at Baptist Hospital East.

Elmer Elzie Gore, Jr. was born on August 6, 1940 in Crestwood, Kentucky to Elnora (Thompson-Evans) and Elmer Gore, Sr. He graduated from Ahrens High School and later completed his education in real estate at Indiana University Southeast. He married the love of his life, Donna Joy (Hendricks), on July 27, 1968.

Elmer's life unfolded as a testament to his remarkable skills as a self-employed carpenter. For over 45 years, he meticulously crafted dreams into reality through his business, Gore Construction. Even in retirement, his hands continued to create, as he owned and operated Gore Insulation and contracted with Frye Plumbing. A true master of his craft, Elmer was a highly respected professional contractor.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Elmer devoted over two and a half decades serving as a Trustee and Elder in his church. His heart overflowed with the spirit of a servant, spending countless hours supporting others and tending to the needs of his family and community. A storyteller at heart, Elmer was known for his humor and the wealth of stories he shared. Above all, his love for the Lord radiated in every aspect of his life. As a devoted husband and father, Elmer leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love and kindness.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Donna Joy (Hendricks); his children Mike Gore (Sherry); Dawn Meador (Dan); and Carl Gore (Loretta); his grandchildren, Logan Gore (Chloe), Heather Churchman (Tyler), Aly Meador, and Alex Meador; with his first great-grandson, Karson, due in January; as well as siblings, Carol Bothwell and Barbara Koontz. He was predeceased by his brother, David Gore; half-sister, Mona Elizabeth Gore Tuton; mother, Elnora Evans; father Elmer Gore, Sr.; and step-father William Evans.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00pm on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Garr Funeral Home in Sellersburg. Friends and family are invited to visitation from 2:00pm until 6:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Norton Children's Hospital in Elmer Elzie Gore's memory. This is also in memorial of his half-sister Mona, who received amazing care and medical treatment at Norton's throughout her childhood.

The family is profoundly grateful to Baptist Hospital East's Palliative Care staff for their unwavering compassion during Elmer's final moments. To those who stood by Elmer throughout his life, offering comforting words and shared memories, your presence has been a source of strength. Friends and extended family, your love and support have been a pillar of strength, reminding us that we are not alone in our sorrow. Your contributions, whether through comforting presence or a helping hand, have made a significant impact, and we are thankful for the bonds that unite us.
