Obituary

Edward “Ed” Rex Hardie, born October 26, 1944, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2026, near his family in Carmel, Indiana, at the age of 81.

Born in Clinton, Indiana, Ed called Sellersburg home for most of his adult life. He loved his home and community and had a beautiful life there, surrounded by so many wonderful friends.

Ed earned a master's degree in Geology from Indiana University, where he cultivated a lifelong passion for the natural world. Whether in the classroom or in friendship, Ed loved sharing his knowledge and wisdom with others. He was known for his fascinating collection of rocks, geodes, and crystals and his amazing gardens.

Throughout his life, Ed embraced a deep connection to nature, spirituality, and holistic well-being. He had many interests and hobbies including rock collecting, gardening, playing music, being surrounded by nature, and participating in and leading Native American rituals and spiritual traditions with his friends.

Ed proudly served in the United States Navy and carried great pride in his service throughout his life.

Ed is survived by his beloved daughter, Suzanne Deitsch, her husband, Steve, and his grandchildren Ben Deitsch and Elizabeth Deitsch; they will greatly miss his wonderful spirit, love and support. He is also survived by his former wife, Janice Hardie, mother to Suzanne and by Veronica Byerley, to whom he was married for many years and who was an important part of his life's journey.

Ed was preceded in death by his father, Edward Hardie; his mother, Martha (Anstead) Hardie; and his sister, Heather Hardie, all of Clinton, Indiana.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held on one of Ed's favorite days, the winter solstice December 21, 2026. Ed always said the winter solstice meant that longer and brighter days were ahead. The celebration will take place in Sellersburg, Indiana with more information forthcoming on a new Facebook page honoring Ed, "Edward ‘Ed’ Rex Hardie Memorial Page.
