Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dexter Ronald Ison, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world on Monday, September 14th, 2026, at the age of 69. Dexter was born on Sunday, October 28th, 1956, in Jeffersonville, Indiana. A dedicated resident of Sellersburg, Indiana, Dexter filled his life and those of others with kindness, strength, and dedication.

Dexter's journey as a hardworking man began at a tender age of 17 at Jeffboat, where he worked diligently for 11 years. He was proud to help launch many boats, including the Lincoln Clipper, a momentous occasion with Minnie Pearl in attendance, and cherished the memories of bringing his family to witness such events. His career then transitioned to that of an esteemed Iron Worker, serving over 25 years as a committed member of the Local 70 Iron Workers Union for more than 30 years.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dexter was a man of simple pleasures and great joys. He found happiness in riding his motorcycle, playing horseshoe, and enjoying a cold Budweiser among friends at the Moose Lodge, his favorite hangout. A passionate cook, he loved preparing meals for his family, and his warmth and joy were most evident when surrounded by his cherished grandchildren.

Dexter is survived by his devoted wife, Rita A. Ison and his loving children, Tiffany Bowling (Randy) and Caleb Ison (Miranda). His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, Meagan Harrison (Katie), Braden Pennington (Kelsey), Kami Sierota (Bailey), Hannah Ison, Lydia Jones, Hope Roberts, Justin Roberts, Faith Roberts and Charles Roberts. He was also blessed with the joy of his great-grandchildren, Millie, Brenley, Griffin, Myla, Rhett, and Elias. Dexter is further survived by his siblings, Sondra Robinson, Vicki Rose, Paul Ison (Kathy), and Robert Emerson (Donna).

He is reunited in eternity with his parents, George Hassel Ison and Myrtle Gilbert and with his brothers Richard "Dickie" Emerson and Byron Ison.

Visitation will take place at Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172) on Friday, September 18th, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and again on Saturday from 9:00 am until the time of the funeral service.
