IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty Joan
(Burmaster) Omicinski
July 20, 1936 – January 16, 2026
Betty Joan Omicinski, a beloved member of the Sellersburg, Indiana community, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2026, at the age of 89. Born in Danvers, Illinois, on Monday, July 20, 1936, Betty brought warmth and kindness to all who knew her.
Betty spent her professional career at Indiana University Southeast, dedicating 28.5 years to the college's bookstore. She began her service when the college was located in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and played a pivotal role during its transition to the New Albany campus. Retiring in 2000, Betty continued to contribute to her community by working at Ray's Lawn and Garden, where she was not only a bookkeeper but also embraced the quirky role of "tractor duster" and took pride in organizing the toy tractors.
Her passion for her community was evident in her longstanding involvement with the Sellersburg Celebrates annual event. A former president and director, Betty spent over 20 years ensuring the festival's success — from scouting vendors and organizing the esteemed hot air balloon glow to caring for the event's staff. She also shared her love for the arts through the Art in The Park event and was a dedicated member of Speed Memorial Church, deeply involved in their Vacation Bible School.
Betty's home was a testament to her love for Christmas, adorned with a vast collection of Santa statues (100's) and ornaments from friends' travels. As a talented knitter, her family and friends cherished the handcrafted pieces she generously shared.
Betty is survived by her loving children, Scott Berkley (Jane) and Lorri Grueber (Mark), and her sister, Mary Moore (John). Her legacy lives on in her grandchildren, Bo Hicks (Tera) and Nolan Berkley (Olivia), and her great-grandchildren, Bradon Hicks, Jenna Hicks, and Ava Berkley. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl M. and Henrietta L. Burmaster, her spouse, Leo A. Omicinski, and her sister, Doris Jean Baker.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a visitation on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Garr Funeral Home (7806 Highway 311, Sellersburg, Indiana 47172).
