Richard Pruitt Werle left this mortal life and stepped into eternity on August 23, 2017 with his loving wife at his bedside. He left a legacy of love, community service and devotion to his God and his family. He was born in Frankfort, Indiana on November 14, 1941 to Charles Richard and Mildred Ann (Pruitt) Werle of Sellersburg. Richard will be missed by those who knew him and who benefited from his caring, friendly attitude.  Richard was a lifelong resident of Sellersburg, Indiana. He never met a stranger and took a deep interest in mentoring young people who worked for the family business. He graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1959 and was recognized as the Outstanding Alumnus in 2009. After graduation, he attended college at Indiana University Southeast. He was a United States Army Reserve Veteran, a retired Volunteer Assistant Fire Chief with the Sellersburg Fire Department, a professional Firefighter with the former Indiana Army Ammunition Plant in Charlestown, a retired employee of Colgate Palmolive in the Plant Protection/Security Division. He owned his own business for over 50 years specializing in customer-driven automotive supplies and repair. During the 1960’s he was a minor sponsor of the Bowles Seal Fast Indy 500 car. He was instrumental in the formation of the Tri-Township Fire Protection District in Sellersburg and was on the board of directors for several terms. He served on the Board of Directors of the former Clark Memorial Hospital. His service to the Methodist Church was lengthy and at present he was still serving on the Board of Trustees, as a Minister of Maintenance, the River Ridge Cluster of United Methodist Churches, Clark County United Methodist Men and Promise Keepers.  He was also the Treasurer for the Sellersburg Cemeterial Association and worked tirelessly to maintain detailed burial records for the cemetery.  Richard was proceeded in death by his parents and is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Janet (Dunn); his son Jason Werle (Dena);  daughter Rachel Duggan (Brian); sister Marcia  Schiller; grandchildren Katey Duggan (Eric Wott); Bailey Duggan (Justin Husband); Calista Werle; Matthew Werle; and Zoe Duggan.  His brothers-in-law, Stephen Dunn of Louisville, Barry Dunn, of Hoschton, GA; and Neal Schiller; sisters-in-law, Claudia Dunn and Jayne Dunn and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held 11AM Tuesday at the Sellersburg United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be Monday from 12Noon-8PM at the Garr Funeral Home and anytime after 9AM until the time of service on Tuesday at the church.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Sellersburg United Methodist Church Stained Window Fund, 226 North New Albany St., Sellersburg, IN 47172 or Sellersburg Cemeterial Association attention Dale McKinley.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.garrfuneralservices.com.
