Shirley JoAnn (Schamel) Hurst

Shirley JoAnn Hurst, 88, peacefully transitioned to eternal life on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at her home in Borden, Indiana surrounded by her family. Born on November 12, 1935, to the late Herbert and Dorothy Schamel (Phillips) in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Throughout her life, Shirley worked alongside her husband in their cabinet business, managing the books and assisting with the day to day operations. A devout member of the First Baptist Church of Pekin, Indiana and a former member of Daisy Hill United Methodist Church, Shirley found solace and community in her faith.

In her leisure time, Shirley found joy in quilting, tending to her vibrant garden, and attending Bible study. Her green thumb was renowned along with baking the most delicious made from scratch desserts. Additionally, she served as the secretary and treasurer for the Daisy Hill Cemetery, leaving a lasting impact on her community.

Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wayne Hurst, her son, Scott Hurst, her brother, Johnny Schamel, and her sisters, Hazel Roach and Helen Symons. She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Hurst (Gina) of Borden, Indiana, her daughter, Pamela Hurst (Steve) of Brownsville, Kentucky and her sister, Carol Sparkman of New Albany, Indiana.

Shirley will be dearly remembered by her grandchildren: Joshua Hurst (Heather) of Pekin, Indiana, Monica Ratliff (Jason) of Crestwood, Kentucky, Bradley Meredith (Nicole) of Brownsville, Kentucky, Kimberly Jaggers (Richie) of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Scotty Hurst (Megan) of Pekin, Indiana, Jennifer Nicks (Travis) of Pekin, Indiana and JoAnna  Davis (Leroy) of Seymour, Indiana, and her great-grandchildren: Hailey Hurst of Pekin, Indiana, Kate Hurst of Pekin, Indiana, Lucas Ratliff of Crestwood, Kentucky, Cooper Ratliff of Crestwood, Kentucky Riley Ratliff of Crestwood, Kentucky, Aidan Meredith of Brownsville, Kentucky, Corbin Jaggers of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Sadie Jaggers of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Norah Hurst of Pekin Indiana, Tucker Hurst of Pekin Indiana, Treven Nicks of Pekin Indiana, Brody Nicks of Pekin, Indiana, Hattie Nicks of Pekin, Indiana, Delsa Nicks of Pekin, Indiana, Corbyn Davis of Seymour, Indiana, and Caylin Davis of Seymour, Indiana. Shirley also leaves numerous nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Friday, April 26, 2024 at the Garr funeral home in Sellersburg with interment to follow at Daisy Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 PM until 8 PM and on Friday from 9 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. Per Shirley’s wishes, Memorial contributions can be made to Saint Jude children’s research Hospital (501 Saint Jude Pl., Memphis, TN  38105)
