James Bernard Schafer

James Bernard "Jim" Schafer, 81, of Sellersburg, IN, passed away on March 13, 2024. He was born on August 13, 1942, in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Jim was a beloved husband to Mary Jo (Hamm) Schafer and a loving father to Christine Heiligenberg (Jason) and Angela Banet (Jeff). He was a cherished grandfather to Nikolaus, Nolan, Caleb, Luke, Margaux, Mallory, and Leo. Jim is survived by his sister Norma (Schafer) Krentz and brother Charles Schafer, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Flora (Renn) Schafer, father Charles Schafer, sister Flo (Schafer) Wessel, and sister Mary Laverne (Schafer) Anderson.

Jim was a graduate of Our Lady of Providence Catholic High School class of 1960 and Bellarmine University Class of 1964. Jim was also a proud veteran, having served in the National Guard. He retired from Precision Tool and Die in 2007 after a successful career that included working for ICI Americas Inc. and Ford Motor Company in Quality Control. Jim was a dedicated member of St. John Paul Catholic Parish of Sellersburg, IN. He was known for his storytelling, creativity, and artistic talents. Jim was a jack of all trades, resourceful, and never met a stranger. He loved to travel, always planning for the next adventure, and was an entertaining host.

In his free time, Jim enjoyed spending time with family, wood working, golfing, playing cards, traveling, bourbon tasting, and supporting Bellarmine and Providence Athletics.

Visitation will be held at Garr Funeral Home on Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 10:00 AM at St. John Paul Catholic Church in Sellersburg, IN.
