Louis Jack Haas entered heavenly peace on December 31, 2017. Jack was born on March 15, 1927 in Sellersburg, Indiana to parents George F. and Mary Appell Haas and had one sister, Shirley Haas Trimpe, all preceding him in death. Survivors include his wife of 68 years Betty Leist Haas, a son Mark Haas (Michelle), daughters Melissa Hinton (Brad), Lucie Cissell (Ralph), Carrie Burton (Gary), and Mary Beth Haas Moore. Jack was proud of and close to his grandchildren: Ali Hinton Abdelkader (Karim), Luke Cissell (Eric), Kevin Burton (Lindsay), Kent Cissell (Kelly), Daniel Burton (Makenzie), Makenzie Moore, Max Moore, and Franci Burton. He was a loving Poppy to his great grandchildren Lena and Nora Abdelkader, Cohen, Ledger, Flynn, and Nash Cissell, River Beth Roby, Sage Burton, and Everly Burton.  Jack’s early years were spent on the family farm learning the value of consistency and hard work, operating machinery from a young age. Upon graduating from Silver Creek High School in 1945 he entered the Army, serving in Germany at the end of WWII. After his marriage to Betty on November 23, 1949, he started Louis J. Haas Excavating when he acquired the area’s first large backhoe. This began a lifelong career of honest work as he eventually took over Haas Construction Company from his father. For over half a century Jack and his crew contributed to the growth of Clark and Floyd Counties creating roads, laying utility lines, and erecting commercial buildings; when riding with Jack anywhere throughout the region, he inevitably had a story about work he did in the area. After retirement at age 85, Jack continued to work hard caring for his wife, home, and family. Jack was President of Cemetery Realty Company, a non-profit formed when he and his father gave over a large portion of property to be designated for Sellersburg Cemetery. Having helped to build Sellersburg Church of Christ, Jack was a long-time member. Jack was also a member of the American Legion Post 204 and the New Albany VFW Post 1693. Visitation will be held Wednesday January 3, 2018 from Noon to 8:00pm at Garr Funeral Home in Sellersburg, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Thursday January 4, 2018.   Contributions to his memory can be made to the Sellersburg Cemetery Association for perpetual care.
